I held a “Personal Style†contest a few weeks ago (as some of you may remember). Though the winner was chosen at random, when Amarachi won I looked her up on Instagram and when I saw her style and the clothing she made I yelled, “I NEED to know more about this girl! I LOVE what she’s doing!† So I decided to interview HER!  Enjoy our Q&A below, and a gallery of some of her favorite looks above!
Tracee Ellis Ross: What would you like to share with us about yourself? (your name, where you are from, how old you are? whatever you feel comfortable sharing)
Amarachi Ukachu: My name is Amarachi Ukachu I’m 22, plus size fashion blogger, student , aspiring designer., DIY enthusiast.
TER: Tell us about this look? (what do you like about the inspiration look and how did you create your version–I heard you made your look yourself…amazing, tell us everything!!!!)
AU: There are so many things that I loved about the inspiration look. I loved how it was so simple but yet so bold. I love the nude color of the maxi skirt and blouse and I adored the bold colors of the sequined tapestry. For my outfit Instead of going with the skirt and blouse I decided to make a maxi dress. I felt the inspiration outfit needed some oomph so I went back to the drawing board and found the sequin tapestry on the web then I remembered I purchased a blanket slightly similar to the tapestry from a local thrift store a couple of months ago. So I dug it out from my closet and got to work on making the oversized clutch.
TER: Have you always made things? How did you learn to sew?
AU: I taught myself how to sew at the age of 7 when my mother purchased my sisters and I a beginners sewing machine for Christmas. My sisters quickly grew tired of it but I loved it! I’ve been sewing nonstop since then. After a while sewing was not fulfilling all my creative needs so I found more things to dabble in. I started making jewelry and handbag and even started revamping shoes. I tried anything I could get my hands on but sewing will always be my first love.
TER: What is your dream for yourself? What do you want to do with your life? and are you on that path now?
AU: I’m a creative individual and would like to use my God given talents any way possible. My ultimate dream is to be a “go to gal†when it comes fashion. But what I want to concentrate on most is designing. I can’t see myself in the future doing anything that does not deal with designing. That’s something that will always be a part of me.
Finally I can say that I am on the path that I need to be! A year ago I would have told you different. Around this time last year I was in a creative rut. I didn’t want to have anything to do with designing so my oldest sister told me to start a website as a creative outlet. After starting up AmarachiUkachu.com I have been designing nonstop! I received so much positive feedback around the web it’s amazing!
TER: How would you describe your style?
AU: I would describe my style as affordable. As a college student most of my paychecks go to my student loans so I try not to spend so much on clothes. It’s also helpful that I make most of my pieces. My style is also ever-changing. The way I dress now will not be how I will dress 6 months for now. I’m all about experimenting with different looks.
TER: What would you suggest to others about style?
AU: Wear what makes you feel good and have fun with fashion! I’ve been on the heavy side all my life and been told what and what not to wear. I wasn’t happy until I stopped listening to what people have to say and wore what made me feel good.
